It is the auspicious full-moon day of the month of Margazhi! O maidens with perfect jewels! Come, let us go for the ritual bath! O wealthy young girls of the prosperous Aayarpadi! Nandagopan, who wields a sharp spear and performs fierce deeds, has a son, Yasoda’s young lion, with beautiful eyes, Whose body is dark like a cloud, eyes red, and face like the sun and moon. Narayana Himself will grant us the drum (PaRai). Let the world praise us as we immerse ourselves, O Embaavaai! O dwellers of this world! Listen to the rites we perform for our Paavai vow: Singing the feet of the Supreme Lord who gently sleeps in the Ocean of Milk, We will not eat ghee or drink milk, we will bathe early in the morning. We will not adorn our eyes with kohl, nor our hair with flowers. We will not do what is forbidden, nor speak ill words. We will give alms and charity as much as we can, And live in a way that ensures our salvation, O Embaavaai! If we sing the name of the Supreme Lord who grew tall and measured the worlds, And perform our Paavai vow by bathing, The country will be free from harm, and the clouds will shower three times a month. Large, ripe paddy fields will teem with leaping carp, And black bees will sleep in the petals of blue water lilies. Generous cows, without holding back, will fill pots to the brim with milk, Giving us unending wealth, O Embaavaai! O Varuna, god of the ocean-like rain! Do not hold back! Enter the ocean, draw up the waters, roar, and ascend! Darken your body like the form of the Primeval Lord, Flash like the discus in the hand of Padmanabha, whose shoulders are mighty, And thunder like His conch, Paanchajanyam! Without delay, shower rain like the arrows from His Sarnga bow, So that the world may live, and we may joyfully bathe in Margazhi, O Embaavaai! By coming purified, offering pure flowers, worshipping, Singing with our mouths and meditating with our minds Upon the Enchanter, the Lord of Northern Mathura, The Lord of the pure waters of the Yamuna, The beautiful lamp born in the cowherd clan, Damodara, who brought glory to His mother’s womb— All our past sins and those that are yet to come Will become like cotton in fire. Declare this, O Embaavaai! Behold! The birds are chirping! Did you not hear the great sound Of the white conch from the temple of the King of birds (Garuda)? Child! Arise! The expert Lord who consumed the demoness’s poisoned breast, Kicked the deceitful cart demon to pieces, And sleeps on the great serpent in the ocean— Sages and yogis, holding Him in their hearts, Are slowly rising, chanting 'Hari! Hari!' Let that great sound enter your heart and cool it, O Embaavaai! Did you not hear the 'keech keech' sounds of the birds everywhere, chattering? O foolish girl! Did you not hear the sound of curd being churned By the cowherd women with fragrant hair, their bangles and ornaments jingling? Singing of the Lord, the dark-hued one, who ate the demoness’s poisoned breast, The son of the cowherds, who was present yesterday, Let us obtain the PaRai and joyfully bathe in Margazhi, O Embaavaai! Behold! The eastern sky has whitened, and the buffaloes have spread out To graze on small pastures. The other girls Are going, but we have come to stop those who are leaving, and call you. O joyful maiden! Arise! If we sing and obtain the PaRai, And go worship the Lord of Lords, who tore open the horse-demon’s mouth And crushed the wrestlers, He will exclaim 'Aahaa!' and graciously bless us, O Embaavaai! O daughter of my uncle, who sleeps on a soft bed In a jewel-studded mansion, with lamps burning all around And incense wafting! Open the jeweled door! O Aunt! Won’t you wake her up? Is your daughter Speechless, or deaf, or exhausted? Has she been enchanted by a spell of deep sleep? Let us repeatedly chant the many names: 'Mighty Enchanter, Madhava, Vaikunthan!' O Embaavaai! O lady who performs vows to enter heaven! Will you not even respond, you who do not open the door? Did Kumbhakarna, who once fell into the mouth of Death, And was defeated by you, bestow his great sleep upon you? O excessively sleepy one! O precious jewel! Come with clarity and open the door, O Embaavaai! O golden creeper of the cowherd clan, who are faultless, Who milk many herds of cows and go to battle to destroy the strength of enemies! O peacock of the forest, with a serpent-like waist! Come forth! All our friends and relatives have come And stand before your courtyard. To sing the name of the cloud-hued Lord, Who measured the worlds, the Supreme Being, And receive the PaRai, is our purpose. O Embaavaai! Behold! The young buffaloes, yearning for their calves, are bellowing, And their udders are overflowing with milk, a great wealth. O Nappinnai, wife of Nandagopan! Did you not hear The great sound of the small conch that roared? Singing of the Lord, the dark-hued one, who ate the demoness’s poisoned breast, The son of the cowherds, who was present yesterday, Let us obtain the PaRai and joyfully bathe in Margazhi, O Embaavaai! O maiden with lotus-like eyes! He who tore the beak of the bird-demon, And plucked out the evil demon (Putana), whose glories we sing, All the girls have entered the field for the Paavai vow. The planet Venus has risen, and Jupiter has set. Behold! The birds are chirping! Why do you lie in bed, Instead of immersing yourself in the cool water and bathing? O Paavai! On this auspicious day, cast off your deceit and join us, O Embaavaai! In the pond in your backyard garden, The red water lilies have opened their mouths, and the blue water lilies have closed theirs. Sing of the Lord with mighty hands holding the conch and discus, And with lotus-like eyes, O Embaavaai! Hello! O young parrot! Are you still sleeping? “Do not call out so coldly, O maidens! I am coming!” Those who slander your mighty Lord’s son, And those who speak evil words, let us Not waste time speaking good words to them, O Embaavaai! Singing of the Lord, the dark-hued one, who ate the demoness’s poisoned breast, The son of the cowherds, who was present yesterday, Let us obtain the PaRai and joyfully bathe in Margazhi, O Embaavaai! O Nandagopala, our Lord, who provides clothes, water, and food, and performs dharma! Arise! O Yasoda, our Empress, the tender shoot among all women, the lamp of our clan! Awaken! O Lord of the celestials, who pierced the sky and measured the worlds! Arise, do not sleep! O Balarama, wealthy one with golden ankleted feet! Do not sleep, you and your brother! O Embaavaai! O Nappinnai, daughter-in-law of Nandagopala, who has mighty shoulders that never retreat, And whose elephants are in rut! O maiden with fragrant, perfumed hair! Open the door! Behold! The cocks are crowing everywhere! Many cuckoos are calling From the jasmine creeper arbour! O maiden with ball-playing fingers! To sing the name of your brother-in-law, With your red lotus-like hand, making your beautiful bangles jingle, Come and open the door joyfully, O Embaavaai! With lamps burning brightly, on a bed with ivory legs, Upon a soft, cotton mattress, you lie with Nappinnai, Whose hair is adorned with clusters of flowers. O you with ten virtues! O Paavai! You who come for the bath! Are you our Lord? Are you sleepy? Sleepy? Sleepy? However much you are separated, O Embaavaai! O Kali, who goes before the thirty-three crores of Devas And removes their fear! Awaken! O pure one, who is righteous and powerful, and brings heat to His enemies! Awaken! O Nappinnai, O maiden, O Lakshmi, with soft, pot-like breasts and red lips with a great smile! Awaken! Give us your fan and mirror, and let your husband Bathe us right now, O Embaavaai! O son of the one who created abundant, generous cows That pour forth ceaseless milk, overflowing the vessels! Awaken, O Lord with a generous heart, O great one, O luminous light Who appeared in the world! Awaken! Have your enemies lost their strength and come to your doorstep To praise you? Praise Him, O Embaavaai! Kings of this vast, beautiful world, their pride shattered, Have come and gathered beneath your bed, As if to offer their conches. With your anklets jingling, Your hands moving, your red eyes reddening, and a slight smile, O Lord of Thirumaliruncholai, with auspicious golden anklets! Arise, you too! O Lord with the colour of the surging ocean! Praise Him, O Embaavaai! Like a majestic lion, resting in a mountain cave, Awakening, opening its fiery eyes, Shaking its fragrant mane, turning on all sides, Stretching powerfully, roaring, and emerging— So do you, O Lord with the colour of the Kaayaa flower! In your temple, in your golden temple courtyard, Let your devotees praise you as you immerse yourself, O Embaavaai! We praise your feet, O You who measured this world that day! We praise your might, O You who went and destroyed Southern Lanka! We praise your glory, O You who kicked the cart demon to its death! We praise your anklets, O You who threw the calf as a club! We praise your nature, O You who lifted the mountain as an umbrella! We praise your spear in hand, O You who conquer and destroy enemies! Thus, we will always praise your heroic deeds and receive the PaRai. Today we have come, have mercy on us, O Embaavaai! Born as the son of one woman, and secretly raised as the son of another In one night, O great Lord, who stood like fire In the stomach of Kamsa, thwarting his evil intentions Because he could not tolerate you! We have come seeking you. If you grant us the PaRai, We will sing of your glorious wealth and heroic deeds, And be rid of our sorrows, and rejoice, O Embaavaai! O Maale! O Mani Vanna! If you ask what the elders do And what is desired for the Margazhi bath, We wish to hear the great PaRai, shining like your Paanchajanyam conch, Which is the colour of milk, and makes the whole world tremble with its sound. As time passes, with the sound of anklets, and the movement of hands, O Govinda with beautiful coral lips! Singing of you, Let us obtain the PaRai and rejoice, O Embaavaai! O Govinda, whose glory conquers those who do not surrender! The reward we receive By singing of you and obtaining the PaRai, will be such that the world will praise it. We will wear many ornaments like bangles, armlets, earrings, ear-flowers, and anklets. We will wear new clothes, and then eat milk-rice Covered with ghee, so much that it flows down our elbows. Let us gather together and be cooled (refreshed), O Embaavaai! We follow the cows and eat in the forest. We are cowherd girls, innocent and ignorant. O Lord! We have come asking you to grant us the PaRai. O Govinda, who lacks nothing! Our relationship with you Cannot be severed here. We are ignorant children, Do not be angry if we called you by small names out of love. O Lord! Grant us the PaRai, O Embaavaai! At this very early hour, we have come to worship you, And praise your golden lotus feet. Listen to our purpose: Born in the clan that grazes cows and lives by it, you must Accept our humble service. Please remove our other desires. For all time, for seven times seven births, we shall be united with you, We shall serve only you. Please remove our other desires, O Embaavaai! Those beautiful maidens with moon-like faces, who went and worshipped Madhava, Kesava, who churned the vast ocean, And obtained the PaRai, this great story of Aani (Andal), These thirty Tamil garlands, whoever recites them without fail In this manner, by the wealthy Thirumal (Vishnu) with four mighty mountain-like shoulders And red lotus-like eyes, will receive His grace everywhere and live in joy. O Nandagopala, our Lord! Arise!
The translation aims for fidelity to the original Tamil, preserving the devotional tone and imagery. 'PaRai' is translated as 'drum' but implies the boon or blessing sought. 'Embaavaai' is an exclamatory address, often retained as is or translated contextually.
Thiruppavai (திருப்பாவை) is a seminal work of Tamil devotional literature, composed by Andal (also known as Kodhai), the only female among the twelve Alvars, the mystic poet-saints of South India. Believed to have lived in the 8th or 9th century CE, Andal was found as a baby in a garden by Periyalvar, another prominent Alvar, in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu. Her life was entirely dedicated to Lord Krishna, whom she envisioned as her divine husband. Thiruppavai, a collection of thirty verses (pasurams), embodies her spiritual yearning and the 'Paavai Nombu' (a vow observed by maidens) to attain union with the Lord. It is a cornerstone of the Srivaishnava tradition and forms part of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the sacred canon of Tamil Vaishnavism. Culturally, Thiruppavai holds immense significance, particularly during the auspicious month of Margazhi (mid-December to mid-January). During this month, devotees, especially women, observe the 'Paavai Nombu,' rising before dawn to sing these verses, seeking spiritual purity and the grace of Lord Krishna. The verses describe Andal's journey with her friends to awaken Krishna and other Gopis, inviting them to join in the vow. Each verse is a poetic masterpiece, rich in imagery, philosophical depth, and expressions of intense devotion (bhakti) and complete surrender (prapatti). It is not merely a collection of prayers but a profound spiritual narrative that guides the devotee towards divine love and self-realization. Thiruppavai is primarily recited or sung in a melodic, traditional style. While not strictly bound by Carnatic raga-tala structures, its verses are often set to simple, evocative tunes that facilitate congregational singing. In temples, particularly in Srivaishnava shrines like Srirangam and Srivilliputhur, the recitation of Thiruppavai is a daily ritual during Margazhi, often accompanied by traditional instruments like the nadaswaram and thavil during specific temple ceremonies. In homes, it is common for families to gather early in the morning to chant these verses, fostering a sense of community and shared devotion. Even today, Thiruppavai continues to be a vibrant part of Tamil cultural and spiritual life. Its literary beauty and spiritual message transcend religious boundaries, attracting scholars, musicians, and devotees alike. It has inspired numerous commentaries, musical compositions (including Carnatic kritis and dance forms like Bharatanatyam), and philosophical interpretations. Efforts to preserve and propagate Thiruppavai include regular recitation sessions, scholarly studies, and digital archiving, ensuring that Andal's timeless message of divine love and surrender remains accessible to future generations. It stands as a testament to the power of devotional poetry and its ability to shape cultural identity and spiritual practice.
Historical Background
Composed by Andal in the 8th or 9th century CE, Thiruppavai belongs to the Alvar period, a golden age of devotional poetry in Tamil Nadu. It reflects the Bhakti movement's emphasis on personal devotion to God, transcending caste and social barriers. Its composition in Tamil made complex philosophical ideas accessible to the common people, significantly shaping the religious landscape of South India.
Cultural Significance
Thiruppavai is a literary and spiritual masterpiece that profoundly influences Tamil culture. It is an integral part of Srivaishnava worship, inspiring countless musical compositions, dance forms, and scholarly interpretations. Its annual recitation during Margazhi fosters community bonding, spiritual discipline, and cultural identity, making it a living tradition that connects generations to their heritage and the timeless message of divine love.
Usage & Performance Context
Thiruppavai is primarily sung or recited daily during the month of Margazhi (mid-December to mid-January) by Vaishnavite devotees, especially women, as part of the 'Paavai Nombu' vow. It is also recited in Vaishnava temples during daily rituals and major festivals.
