Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, O foolish mind! When the appointed time (death) arrives, the rules of grammar will surely not save you. || 1 || O fool! Give up your thirst to amass wealth. Cultivate good thoughts, devoid of desire, in your mind. Be content with the wealth that comes through your past actions, And with that, entertain your mind. || 2 || Do not get deluded by seeing a woman's full breasts and navel. Reflect again and again in your mind that these are but modifications of flesh and fat. || 3 || The life of a man is as uncertain as water drops on a lotus leaf. Know that the entire world is afflicted by disease, ego, and sorrow. || 4 || As long as a man is capable of earning wealth, So long his family is attached to him. But when he lives in an old, decrepit body, No one in the house even asks about his well-being. || 5 || As long as there is breath in the body, So long people in the house inquire about his welfare. But once the breath departs and the body decays, Even his wife fears that very body. || 6 || Childhood is spent in play, Youth is lost in attachment to a young woman. Old age passes away in worry and contemplation (of past deeds). But no one is attached to the Supreme Brahman. || 7 || Who is your wife? Who is your son? This worldly existence is exceedingly strange. Whose are you? Who are you? From where have you come? O brother, reflect upon this truth here. || 8 || Through good company, comes non-attachment; Through non-attachment, comes freedom from delusion; Through freedom from delusion, comes steadfastness of mind; Through steadfastness of mind, comes liberation in life. || 9 || When youth has passed, what is the use of lustful desires? When water has dried up, what is the use of a lake? When wealth is diminished, what is the use of a family? When the Truth is known, what is the use of worldly existence (samsara)? || 10 || Do not boast of wealth, people (followers), or youth; Time snatches away all these in a moment. Abandoning this entire world, which is an illusion, Enter into the state of Brahman, having known it. || 11 || Day and night, dusk and dawn, Winter and spring come again and again. Time plays, life passes away, Yet the wind of desire never leaves. || 12 || O madman! Why this engrossment in thoughts of wealth and wife? Is there no one to control you? In the three worlds, only the company of good people Becomes the boat to cross the ocean of worldly existence. || 13 || One with matted locks, a shaven head, or hair pulled out; Dressed in various ochre robes; Though seeing, the fool does not see, Indeed, he assumes many guises for the sake of his belly. || 14 || The body is worn out, the head is grey, The mouth is toothless, the face wrinkled. The old man walks leaning on a stick, Yet he does not abandon the lump of desires. || 15 || Fire in front, sun at the back, At night, knees drawn up to the chin; Begging for alms in the palm of his hand, living under a tree, Even then, he does not abandon the noose of desires. || 16 || One may go to the Ganga, observe fasts, Or give away riches in charity. Devoid of knowledge, according to all schools of thought, One does not attain liberation even in a hundred births. || 17 || Dwelling in a temple of the gods or at the foot of a tree, With the earth as a bed, a deerskin as clothing; Renouncing all possessions and enjoyments, To whom does such detachment not bring happiness? || 18 || Whether one is engrossed in Yoga or engrossed in worldly pleasures, Whether one is attached to company or free from company; He whose mind delights in Brahman Rejoices, rejoices, indeed rejoices! || 19 || One who has studied a little of the Bhagavad Gita, Has drunk a drop of Ganga water, And has worshipped Murari (Vishnu) even once, Will not have a discussion with Yama (the god of death). || 20 || Again birth, again death, Again lying in the mother's womb. In this samsara, which is indeed difficult to cross, O Murari, protect me with your boundless mercy! || 21 || Clothed in rags picked from the road, Following a path free from merit and demerit; Neither am I, nor are you, nor is this world (real); Then why is sorrow felt? || 22 || Who are you? Who am I? From where have I come? Who is my mother? Who is my father? Thus, reflect on all this as unsubstantial, Abandoning the world as a dream. || 23 || In you, in me, and elsewhere, there is but one Vishnu; You are needlessly angry and impatient with me. See the Self in everyone, And abandon the ignorance of differentiation everywhere. || 24 || Abandon desire, anger, greed, and delusion; Reflect on the Self, 'Who am I?' Fools devoid of self-knowledge Are cooked in the hidden hells. || 25 || Recite the Bhagavad Gita and the thousand names (of Vishnu); Meditate constantly on the form of the Lord of Lakshmi (Vishnu); Direct the mind to the company of the good; And distribute wealth to the poor and needy. || 26 || Pleasure is easily indulged in, But alas, afterwards, disease afflicts the body. Although death is the ultimate refuge in this world, Still, one does not abandon sinful conduct. || 27 || Always consider wealth as a source of trouble; Truly, there is no trace of happiness in it. Fear comes even from one's own son for the wealthy; This is the established custom everywhere. || 28 || Practice Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Discrimination between the eternal and the ephemeral; Along with chanting, practice Samadhi (meditative absorption); Pay attention, pay great attention! || 29 || O devotee firmly devoted to the lotus feet of the Guru, May you soon be liberated from samsara! Through the discipline of the senses and the mind, Thus will you see the Lord dwelling in your own heart. || 30 || Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, O foolish mind! When the appointed time (death) arrives, the rules of grammar will surely not save you. || 31 ||
The translation aims for a faithful rendering of the Advaitic and Bhakti sentiments, balancing literal accuracy with poetic flow. Some verses contain strong admonitions characteristic of Shankaracharya's direct and compassionate teaching style.
Bhaja Govindam is an iconic Sanskrit devotional composition attributed to the revered 8th-century CE Indian philosopher and theologian, Adi Shankaracharya. Born in Kalady, Kerala, Shankaracharya is the principal expounder of the Advaita Vedanta philosophy, a non-dualistic school of Hindu thought. The composition is believed to have originated in Varanasi (Kashi), a holy city in Uttar Pradesh, India. Legend has it that Shankaracharya, while walking with his disciples, observed an aged scholar meticulously memorizing Sanskrit grammar rules. Pained by the scholar's misplaced focus at an advanced age, Shankaracharya spontaneously burst forth with these verses, urging him and all humanity to prioritize spiritual devotion and self-realization over mere intellectual pursuits and worldly attachments. Culturally, Bhaja Govindam holds immense significance as a concise yet profound summary of Advaita Vedanta and the importance of Bhakti (devotion). It serves as a spiritual 'hammer to delusion' (Moha Mudgara), striking at the root of attachment to transient worldly pleasures and material wealth. The verses emphasize the impermanence of life, youth, and relationships, advocating for renunciation, detachment, and a steadfast focus on the divine. It is not typically associated with specific festivals but is a timeless piece for daily reflection and spiritual awakening, often recited during satsangs (spiritual gatherings) and personal meditation. Bhaja Govindam is primarily a devotional hymn (stotram) and a *prakarana grantha* (introductory manual), making it accessible to a wide audience, including those new to Vedantic philosophy. It is typically sung or chanted individually or congregationally, often without elaborate instrumental accompaniment, though harmoniums, tablas, and cymbals may be used in group settings. Its simple language and melodious structure make it appealing across generations. Renowned artists like M.S. Subbulakshmi have popularized its rendition, making it a staple in many Hindu households and spiritual centers. In contemporary times, Bhaja Govindam remains profoundly relevant as a powerful reminder to navigate the complexities of modern life with spiritual wisdom. Its message of prioritizing inner peace and self-knowledge over fleeting external achievements resonates deeply in a materialistic world. It encourages introspection, ethical living, and the cultivation of compassion. For cultural preservation, its continued study, chanting, and dissemination through various media ensure that its timeless wisdom continues to inspire seekers on the path of liberation and spiritual growth, serving as a foundational text for understanding Advaita philosophy and the role of devotion within it.
Historical Background
Composed by Adi Shankaracharya, a pivotal figure in Indian philosophy, generally dated to the 8th century CE. The hymn is believed to have been composed in Varanasi (Kashi). It is considered a *prakarana grantha*, an introductory text that encapsulates the essence of Advaita Vedanta in simple, accessible verses, making profound philosophical concepts understandable to the common person.
Cultural Significance
Bhaja Govindam is one of the most celebrated and widely known Sanskrit devotional compositions in Indian culture. It is highly influential in popularizing the core tenets of Advaita Vedanta and emphasizing the importance of devotion (Bhakti) as a means to spiritual liberation. Its direct and often stark admonitions against worldly attachments have made it a powerful tool for spiritual awakening and introspection across generations.
Usage & Performance Context
Primarily used for personal spiritual reflection, daily chanting, meditation, and study in homes, ashrams, and spiritual centers. It is also recited during satsangs (spiritual gatherings) and philosophical discussions. Not tied to specific seasonal or ritual festivals, but suitable for any auspicious occasion or daily practice.
