O my dear brother mind, I grasp your feet and beg you with sweet words: Please cast away all hypocrisy and develop intense, unprecedented love for my spiritual master, Vrajabhumi, the people of Vraja, the Vaishnavas, the brahmanas, your initiation mantra, the holy name, and in remembering the fresh young couple of Vraja, Radha and Krishna. O mind, don't concern yourself with the duties and impious deeds described in the Vedas. Rather, intently serve Sri Sri Radha-Krishna in Vraja. Always remember that the son of Sachi (Lord Chaitanya) is the son of Maharaja Nanda, and that the guru is Mukunda's dearmost. O Mind! If you desire to reside in Vraja birth after birth, and if you desire to directly serve the youthful Divine Couple there with attachment, then with intense love always remember and bow down to Srila Svarupa Damodara Gosvami, to Srila Rupa Gosvami and his elder brother, Srila Sanatana Gosvami, and to all their associates and followers, and then listen to them. O mind, give up talking of the unreal. Such talks are a prostitute who will steal the most valuable possession of your heart. Don't listen to talks of liberation, which are a tigress that devours your entire soul. You should even give up attraction for Lord Narayana, which leads to the world of Vaikuntha. Instead, O mind, just worship Sri Sri Radha-Krishna in Vraja, for they will bestow on you the jewel of pure love for themselves. O mind, why do you always throw me about and roar like a tiger of anger? Why do you quickly burn within yourself due to this bad habit? Give up this habit and worship the associates of Sri Radha, who are dear to Her, by serving the youthful Divine Couple of Vraja. O friend! Why do you wander in the wicked realm of soldiers (sense objects)? Where is even a trace of auspiciousness or true happiness there? Always meditate on the lotus feet of the most beloved Hari, just as the gopis worship the youthful Divine Couple of Vraja. O mind! As long as the impudent untouchable woman of the desire for fame dances in my heart, why should pure love for Radha-Krishna touch me? O mind, continuously serve my spiritual master, the leader of those who are dear to the Lord. Then my master will quickly kick out that harridan and allow that pure love to enter. O mind! As long as the impudent untouchable woman of the desire for fame dances in my heart, why should pure love for Radha-Krishna touch me? These eleven excellent instructions to the mind grant all spiritual benedictions. A person who stays with the devotees, follows Srila Rupa Gosvami, and with a sweet voice loudly sings these eleven verses will attain the matchless jewel of direct service to Sri Sri Radha-Krishna in the forest of Gokula.
The translation aims for faithful rendition of the Sanskrit, preserving the devotional mood and philosophical depth. Emphasis is placed on direct address to the mind, a key feature of the work.
Manah Siksha, meaning 'Instructions to the Mind,' is a profound devotional poem composed by Srila Raghunatha Dasa Gosvami, one of the Six Gosvamis of Vrindavan, in the 16th century. These Gosvamis were direct disciples of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and were instrumental in establishing the philosophical and practical tenets of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Raghunatha Dasa Gosvami was renowned for his unparalleled renunciation and deep absorption in the devotional service of Radha and Krishna. He spent much of his life in Vrindavan, engaging in intense bhajana (devotional practices) and writing numerous works that guide practitioners on the path of raganuga-bhakti, or spontaneous devotional service. Manah Siksha is considered one of his most intimate and direct instructions, addressed to his own mind, but intended for all sincere aspirants. Culturally, Manah Siksha holds immense significance within the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. It is an essential text for those serious about cultivating pure devotion to Radha and Krishna in the mood of the Vraja gopis. The verses systematically guide the mind away from material attachments, mundane talks, and desires for liberation, directing it towards exclusive service to the Divine Couple and Their associates in Vrindavan. It is often studied and recited by devotees as a daily practice to purify the mind and deepen one's spiritual resolve. The instructions are not merely theoretical but practical, emphasizing humility, renunciation of hypocrisy, and intense love for guru, Vaishnavas, and the holy name. Manah Siksha is primarily a text for internal contemplation and meditation rather than public performance. While it is recited individually, its principles inform the collective devotional practices of Gaudiya Vaishnavas. It is not typically sung with instruments in a kirtan setting like bhajans, but rather chanted or meditated upon silently or aloud as a personal prayer. The work is a cornerstone for developing the internal mood (bhava) necessary for advanced devotional service. It is often studied in ashrams and temples, particularly during periods of intense spiritual practice or study circles, to understand the nuances of raganuga-bhakti. Today, Manah Siksha remains a vital guide for Gaudiya Vaishnavas worldwide. Its timeless instructions on purifying the mind, cultivating genuine humility, and developing exclusive devotion to Radha and Krishna continue to inspire practitioners. In an age of distractions and material pursuits, its emphasis on inner purification and single-pointed focus on spiritual goals is more relevant than ever. Efforts to preserve and disseminate this text include its translation into various languages, commentaries by prominent acharyas like Bhaktivinoda Thakur, and its inclusion in devotional anthologies. These efforts ensure that future generations of devotees can access and benefit from Raghunatha Dasa Gosvami's profound wisdom, thereby preserving a crucial aspect of Vaishnava heritage.
