I bow my head to King Kulashekhara, in whose city the Ranga-yatra (procession of Lord Ranganatha) is proclaimed day after day. O Mukunda, please make me constantly chant Your names: Sri-Vallabha (beloved of Lakshmi), Varada (bestower of boons), Dayapara (supremely merciful), Bhakta-Priya (dear to devotees), Bhava-Lunthana-Kovida (expert in plundering the cycle of birth and death), Natha (Lord), Naga-Shayana (one who reclines on the serpent), and Jagan-Nivasa (abode of the universe). (1) All glories, all glories to this Lord, the son of Devaki! All glories, all glories to Krishna, the lamp of the Vrishni dynasty! All glories, all glories to Him whose body is soft and dark like a cloud! All glories, all glories to Mukunda, who removes the burden of the earth! (2) O Mukunda, I bow my head and humbly beg this one desire from You: By Your grace, may I never forget Your lotus feet in birth after birth. (3) O Hari, I do not worship Your lotus feet to attain duality-free liberation, nor to escape the terrible hell of Kumbhipaka, nor to sport with beautiful, soft-limbed women in a pleasure garden. In every birth, may I meditate on You in the abode of my heart. (4) Whether my dwelling be in heaven or on earth, or even in hell, O destroyer of hell (Narakantaka), I intensely desire that I may remember Your lotus feet, which surpass the autumnal lotus in beauty, even at the time of death. (5) O lotus-eyed one, O Murabhidi (destroyer of Mura), do not cease, O mind, to remember Him, who holds the conch and discus. He indeed quickly removes the terrible cycle of existence (samsara) and all sins; may He be pleased with you. (6) O mind, do not bear ill-will even mentally towards any living being. Listen to the truth, I speak the truth: Always practice dharma, give up worldly talk, serve saintly persons, and conquer the thirst for desires. (7) I always seek the company of those sages who constantly sing and remember the verses that form a cage for Mukunda's lotus feet, and whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (8) Great and wonderful is the nectar from the lotus feet of Sri Govinda, which those who drink never abandon, and those who do not drink abandon everything else. (9) O Krishna, grant me, out of Your mercy, an easy death, a life without destitution, and unwavering devotion to You. (10) O Gopala! O ocean of mercy! O husband of the daughter of the ocean! O destroyer of Kamsa! O You who showed supreme compassion to Gajendra! O Madhava! O younger brother of Rama! O guru of the three worlds! O lotus-eyed one! O Lord of the Gopis! Protect me, for I know none other than You. (11) O Bhagavan, be pleased that my devotion to You is firm. At the time of the departure of life, when the throat is choked by phlegm, wind, and bile, how can I remember You? Therefore, I meditate on You even now, at the time of my death. (12) O tongue, chant the names of Keshava, Muraripu! O mind, worship Sridhara! O two hands, worship Him! O two ears, listen to the stories of Achyuta! O two eyes, behold Krishna! O two feet, go to the temple of Hari! O nose, smell the Tulasi from Mukunda's feet! O head, bow to Adhokshaja! (13) Those who are skilled in opening their eyes (to truth) through service to Your feet, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (14) O Sri Krishna, Govinda, Hari, Murare! O Natha, Narayana, Vasudeva! O tongue, drink this nectar alone: Govinda, Damodara, Madhava! (15) O Vishnu, Lord of Lords, O God, be my refuge, for I am ignorant and always performing some actions. (16) O foolish mind, do not fear, thinking of the many long torments of Yama (death god). These enemies of sin cannot prevail, for Lord Hari, my master, is present. Whatever actions I perform, O Shambhu (Vishnu), all that is Your worship. Grant me, O Keshava, unwavering devotion as I meditate thus. (17) Those who have truly entered the ocean of samsara, full of waves of calamity, and those who go to heaven but do not cultivate devotion to You, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (18) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (19) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (20) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (21) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (22) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (23) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (24) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (25) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (26) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (27) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (28) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (29) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (30) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (31) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (32) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (33) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (34) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (35) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (36) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (37) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (38) Those who are unable to cross the terrible ocean of samsara, I always seek the company of those whose minds are like Your lotus feet. (39) This composition has been created by King Kulashekhara, the bee at the lotus feet of the lotus-eyed Lord, whose two beloved friends, the best among Brahmins and heroes among poets, were Padma and Shara, the bearers of scriptural knowledge. (40) Thus, the Mukunda Mala composed by Kulashekhara.
The translation aims for fidelity to the Sanskrit original, preserving the devotional fervor and philosophical depth. Challenges included rendering complex Sanskrit compounds and maintaining poetic flow.
The Mukunda Mala is a profound Sanskrit devotional hymn (stotra) composed by King Kulashekhara, also known as Kulasekhara Alvar, who reigned in the Chera kingdom of medieval South India. Historians generally place his reign between 800 and 820 CE, making him a significant figure in the 8th-9th century Bhakti movement. Born into the Travancore royal family in what is now Kerala, King Kulashekhara was a powerful and just ruler who expanded his kingdom to include parts of the Chola and Pandya territories. However, his heart was deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu, and he is revered as the seventh of the twelve Alvars, the mystic saint-poets of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Culturally, Mukunda Mala holds immense significance within Vaishnavism, particularly the Sri Vaishnava tradition. It is a pan-Vaishnava text, cherished by devotees across various sub-traditions. The hymn expresses intense devotion (bhakti) to Lord Mukunda (a name for Krishna/Vishnu, meaning 'giver of liberation'), emphasizing themes of surrender (saranagati), constant remembrance of the Lord's names, detachment from material desires, and an unwavering longing for divine presence. It is recited daily by many devotees and is frequently chanted during major Vaishnava festivals and rituals in temples, especially in South India. The work's emphasis on the fragility of the material body and the importance of respecting devotees also contributes to its spiritual guidance. While Mukunda Mala is a literary composition, its performance context is primarily devotional chanting. It is not typically associated with specific folk music styles or instruments, but rather with traditional Sanskrit recitation (stotra patha). Devotees, priests, and scholars chant these verses individually or communally in temples, homes, and spiritual gatherings. The melodic rendering often follows traditional Sanskrit chanting patterns, emphasizing clear pronunciation and devotional mood. King Kulashekhara's deep personal devotion, as expressed in these verses, makes the hymn a powerful tool for cultivating bhakti. Today, Mukunda Mala continues to be a cornerstone of Vaishnava spirituality. Its timeless verses resonate with seekers worldwide, offering a path to connect with the divine through heartfelt prayer and glorification of the Lord's names and attributes. It serves as a testament to the rich literary and devotional heritage of India and the enduring power of the Bhakti movement. The work is preserved through countless printed editions, online resources, and oral traditions, ensuring its continued influence on spiritual life and cultural identity. The 'Kulasekhara Padi' (step) at the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple is named in his honor, signifying his profound devotion and desire to be a humble servant at the Lord's feet.
Historical Background
Composed by King Kulashekhara (Kulasekhara Alvar) of the Chera Dynasty, who ruled parts of present-day Kerala and Tamil Nadu around 800-820 CE. He was a prominent figure in the South Indian Bhakti movement and one of the twelve Alvars. His work reflects the flourishing of Vaishnava devotion during this period.
Cultural Significance
Mukunda Mala is a foundational text in Sri Vaishnavism, inspiring generations of devotees. It embodies the ideal of royal devotion and the universal appeal of Bhakti. Its verses are deeply ingrained in South Indian spiritual culture, influencing temple practices, philosophical discourse, and personal spiritual sadhana. The 'Kulasekhara Padi' at Tirumala temple is a direct cultural legacy.
Usage & Performance Context
Daily recitation by Vaishnava devotees; chanted during temple rituals and festivals, particularly those dedicated to Vishnu/Krishna, throughout South India. It is a core text in Sri Vaishnava liturgy.
